What to expect when you get home?

When you return from your trip, your family will be a very important source of help for your recovery. You should review your doctor’s discharge documentation and directions very carefully and share them with your family. It is important to clearly communicate to your family what you will need to have a successful recovery and ensure long term success of your procedure.

Global Makeovers will schedule a checkup with a local doctor as part of our comprehensive service. This doctor will have an overview of your procedures and will ensure that you are progressing in your recovery and verify that there are no concerns. This physician does not replace the need for your own personal doctor. We always recommend you contact your local doctor and that they are informed of your trip prior to departure. Prior to your trip, the lines of communication between your local doctor and your doctor overseas should have been established. After your return you should contact your local doctor in person or even with a brief email to let them know you have completed your vacation. Based on your overseas doctor’s instructions, you may have antibiotics prescriptions that need to be refilled or physical therapy that needs to be approved, so it is best to contact your local doctor immediately upon return.

Most local physicians are understanding and cooperative, especially if they were informed before the trip and you have brought home complete and thorough medical records. If for any reason, you find your physician uncooperative, consider seeking an alternative doctor immediately.

Your full recovery
Regardless of the intensity of your procedure, don't be surprised if you find that you need a longer time to fully recover. You have just had a long trip. Most travelers underestimate the effects of jet lag. Some travelers say that for everyone hour of time zone difference, travelers should allow one day to fully recover from jet lag. For a trip to Asia, that's nearly two weeks! Typical jet lag symptoms include disorientation, fatigue, and general tiredness, inability to sleep, loss of concentration, loss of drive, headaches, upset stomach, and a general feeling of un-wellness. You are also recovering from a medical procedure. Do not be afraid to ask for assistance. The healing body needs a great deal of rest and attention. Don't be afraid to voice a gentle reminder to friends and family that you're still recuperating even after your luxurious vacation.
