Abdominoplasty is a major surgery and does involve some risks. If you properly prepare for the surgery and follow your surgeon’s instructions, the risks are very rare and are the same as other surgeries including infection, blood clots, or that there will be complications to the healing process an excess scarring.

Are travel and vacation activities compatible with surgery?

Following surgery, tummy tuck recovery time may vary for each patient. It may take you several weeks to feel completely back to normal. Full recovery may take 2 to 4 weeks depending on the procedure and the fitness of the patient. You may begin light activities after about three days so all vacation activities should be scheduled before the procedure.

Preparing for the procedure

A tummy tuck is usually performed under general anesthesia with the patient asleep. There are several methods the surgeon may choose, but most frequently used by physicians involves a "u" shaped incision made below the hip bone, across the pubic area to under the other hip bone. A second incision is made around the navel. Often lax abdominal muscles are sutured to tighten loose or stretched muscles. Excess skin and fat is removed before the incisions are closed with small sutures and the navel is reconstructed. A tummy tuck will take between 2 to 5 hours to perform.

Planning for my recovery

The evening after your abdominoplasty surgery, you may be groggy from the anesthetic and/or oral medications. When you wake up after tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen may be very swollen and it may be throbbing. You should take your pain medication immediately, as pain interferes with healing. There is absolutely no reason to be tough and suffer through the pain. As the days go on the swelling and pain will dissipate. You may have bruising, but this will go away as well. Bruising and swelling are normal and only to be expected after most surgeries. It is also normal for the skin on your abdomen to be numb. Sensation will usually come back gradually over the course of several months. Sometimes, the first thing you will feel in areas that were numb is itchiness or tingling. There is the possibility that sensation in the skin will not come back completely.
